Slack’s CEO Stewart Butterfield took inspiration from his passion and love of the outdoors to provide the vision for their San Francisco Headquarters.
Slack asked San Francisco based Studio O+A to bring this nature inspired vision to life across their new multi-floor home. Each floor reflects the landscapes of the Pacific Crest Trail, with the goal of creating links between hiking the wilderness and work.
two was tasked with filling large spaces, that naturally invite growth and change. Untethered privacy panels created impromptu meeting spaces, perfect for quick team check-ins of any size. In contrast, large conference rooms equipped with meeting tables supported status meetings for months-long projects.
Just as wayfinding on a mountain trail is often a matter of conferring with other hikers, every work day is an experience of collaborating with others to find your way to the next level. The unique configurations of each floor at Slack echo the mental stimulation—and need for community— that comes with taking a new path.
2d, a division of two, recreated the outdoor experience by curating art and decor. Petrified wood pieces and vibrant moss walls evoked imagery of old-growth forests. Tiny details such as vintage books, delicate baubles, and colorful ceramic pottery accented each floor with warmth and texture, bringing the space to life.
